IN 1899 the Australian State of New South Wales called for nominations of suitable sites to build the proposed Federal Capital City of Australia and Alexander Oliver was appointed Commissioner to investigate and report.
The residents of the small country town of Queanbeyan were sixth in line to nominate and lobbied the politicians for ten years that Queanbeyan-Canberra in the Queanbeyan District should be the Australian Federal Capital site. In the Queanbeyan Courthouse on June 11, 1900 twelve men gave evidence to this effect to the Commissioner Alexander Oliver.
But Before Canberra was named the Capital of Australia on March 12, 1913, the Federal Government had chosen Dalgety as the capital in 1904 and with that choice the Canberra saga began.
